Developing our "meet the team" theme my colleagues on the editorial side thought it would be appropriate if I was to be profiled in this issue. I am not sure if it was their way of having a laugh at my expense or a genuine desire to impart information but here goes.
I started my business life as a sixteen year old, rather callow youth in the swinging sixties working as an office junior for the claims department of the Eagle Star (sadly a victim of the merger mania that
swept the industry in the 1990's.) The grounding I received in the areas of claims negotiation and policy interpretation was second to none and something that has stayed with me ever since.
Moving swiftly on I qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute in the early 70's and around that time decided to become a broker, which has been my occupation ever since. During the
intervening years I have always been client driven which has provided me not only with job satisfaction but also lifelong friends from within my customer base. As an added bonus I have also had the privilege of managing the northern operations for two of the biggest brokers in
the world prior to setting up PHPL. My motivation in doing so stemmed from a feeling that somewhere
along the way insurance had lost many of the values that were the foundations of a respected, if somewhat misunderstood industry. I decided that the standards on which my own career had flourished stood up well to the test of time and provided a stable platform on which to build a business geared to high quality service based on old fashioned values.
PHPLL takes up most of my energy but with the outstanding development of the team I am gradually finding more time to indulge my passion for sport and the outdoors as well as the occasional pint.
